Mark Her Absent
Daisy Maryles, with Dick Donahue -- 2/23/98
This week marks the first time in 16 months that PW's trade paperback weekly list d s include one of Oprah's book club picks among the top 15. It's not that Oprah has lost her clout, but that her last two selections were children's titles and a Toni Morrison hardcover. The Scholastic titles -- Bill Cosby's Little Bill books -- lead PW's Children's Bestseller list in the series category, and Knopf's Paradise holds the #2 fiction hardcover slot, edged out of first place only by the mighty Grisham. In 1997, Oprah selections ruled the trade paper list, with most weeks having as many as four of her picks. One of her chosen books held the top spot for a total of 21 weeks.
