Landoll Inks Deal with DreamWorks
-- 2/23/98
Landoll Inc. has signed a five-year agreement with DreamWorks that gives the children's publisher the right to publish $4-and-under books based on selected DreamWorks animated and live-action motion-picture properties. Under the deal, Landoll will produce coloring books, activity books and storybooks.
Landoll will begin its DreamWorks publishing program with the creation of 10 titles for Small Soldiers and six for The Prince of Egypt. Small Soldiers is set for release in July, while The Prince of Egypt, DreamWorks's first full-length animated film, will be released in the holiday season. Landoll president Marty Myers said the company's emphasis "will be to enhance the movies' popularity with children through innovations in coloring and storybooks."

The deal with Landoll follows an agreement DreamWorks made with Penguin Putnam late last year to publish books with price points above $4 (News, Dec. 15, 1997).

In a separate agreement, Landoll expanded its relationship with Nickelodeon to include the publication of coloring books and activities based on the network's Blue's Clues show. Landoll is already producing low-priced books based on Nickelodeon's Rugrats show. In the first eight months of distribution, Landoll said it has printed and shipped more than seven million Rugrats units.
