Ascher Leaves Meulenhoff
Herbert R. Lottman -- 3/2/98
Maarten Asscher, one of the friendliest faces in European publishing, and a most effective editor on his own turf, is moving from the top job at Amsterdam's J.M. Meulenhoff to run the arts department in the Dutch Ministry of Culture. Asscher told associates that after 17 years in books he wishes to move into the broader field of theater, opera, the visual arts and architecture. He will be replaced as of May 1 by Chantal d'Aulnis, presently publisher and managing director of Arena, a recently acquired J.M. Meulenholff subsidiary.
Both companies are part of the tentacular Meulenhoff group, the largest in the Netherlands, with some 25% of the total trade market.
