Darcy O'Brien: Dead on Eve of Big Book Tour
-- 3/16/98
Edgar Award-winning writer Darcy O'Brien (Power to Hurt; Murder in Little Egypt) died of a heart attack on March 2 in his home in Tulsa, Okla., at the age of 59. His death came on the eve of Rodale's $250,000-plus marketing push for his change-of-pace next book, The Hidden Pope: The Untold Story of a Lifelong Friendship That Is Changing the Relationship Between Catholics and Jews: The Personal Journey of John Paul II and Jerzy Kluger, an April release from its Daybreak Books imprint. Rodale publicity director Cindy Ratzlaff told PW that Kluger, who was expected to accompany O'Brien on a four-city tour, will now carry on alone, and that media promotion, such as scheduled Time and New York Times features on the book, will go ahead as planned. "It's been an unbelievable tragedy," said Ratzlaff, who had spoken to O'Brien only a hour before his death.
