Power to the Empowerer
-- 4/27/98
Iyanla Vanzant, an empowerment specialist who works with both men and women-to date generally in the African American community-has more than proven that her books can also reach a wider audience. With one title, In the Meantime: Finding Yourself and the Love You Want, on the national charts, and a second, One Day My Soul Just Opened Up, right below the top 15, Vanzant and publisher Fireside have demonstrated that hard work pays off. For the two January releases, the author went on a four-month tour that included 50 appearances plus local media in 14 cities. The print figure for In the Meantime is up to 250,000; for One Day it's about 235,000. Fireside has published Vanzant for about five years and its most successful title is Acts of Faith; that 1993 book has more than 700,000 copies. Two other books -- The Value in the Valley and Faith in the Valley -- have a combined paper and cloth figure of about one million.
