Betty Eadie Starts Her Own Press
Calvin Reid -- 7/6/98
After publishing her first two books with a small regional press and a large New York house, respectively, bestselling inspirational author Betty J. Eadie has now launched her own imprint, Onjinjinkta Publishing, to publish her third book this fall. Eadie is part Lakota Sioux, and Onjinjinkta is a Sioux word for rose in bloom.
Onjinjinkta Publishing, based in Seattle, is a part of Onjinjinkta Enterprises (which includes a literary agency), the company Eadie established after the publication of her first book, Embraced by the Light, in 1992. Peter Orullian, editor at Onjinjinkta Publishing, told PW that because of the spiritual nature of her works, "Betty decided that she wanted to publish her own books." OP also has plans to publish authors other than Eadie, and in the spring of 1999 will release The Soul's Remembrance by Roy Mills.

The imprint has about nine employees who handle editorial; marketing and direct-mail sales. The house is making presentations to the national distributors, and an independent publicity firm is being contracted to handle promotion, including a multicity book tour to promote Eadie's next book, The Ripple Effect: Our Harvest, due in October. The book will have an initial printing of 50,000, although Orullian expects ultimately to sell a minimum of 250,000 copies. "We're concerned about returns," he said, "so we're being conservative."Onjinjinkta Enterprises also manages the sales of Eadie's audiotapes, videos and music CDs. Eadie's Embraced by the Light was first published in 1992 by Nevada-based Gold Leaf Press and later reprinted by Pocket Books. Her next book, The Awakening Heart, was published in 1996, also by Pocket. The books have a combined total of more than six million copies in print. The Betty Eadie Website is located at www.embracedbythelight.com.
