Gray's In the Pink
-- 7/20/98
John Gray's latest bestseller, Mars and Venus Starting Over, is really popping in book outlets across the country. Following the June 24 national laydown, HarperCollins's first printing of 250,000 has all but sold out; two trips back to press bring the in-print total to 272,500. Two days of media exposure in New York City (including a Today appearance), a USA Weekend cover story and a one-hour Oprah segment (air date was July 9) have all propelled Gray's latest onto the charts. During the Oprah taping session in May, that book promoter extraordinaire was so impressed with both the author and her audience's reaction that she decided on the spot to tape a second full hour-set to air August 5. The USA story also gave details on a contest in which the grand prize is a weekend trip to San Francisco that includes a lunchtime consultation with Gray. The author's current visibility is also helping his backlist sales, especially for his first book, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, which is among PW's top 25 nonfiction titles this week. That 1992 book boasts a total of 6.5 million hardcover copies in print after 126 trips to press.
