Just Pretend Begins Book Series
-- 8/10/98

This fall Manchester, N.H.-based Just Pretend, a specialty toymaker, will launch a series of modernized fairy tales targeting middle-grade girls, called Stardust Classics.

Featuring three independent-minded heroines (a princess, a wood fairy and a contemporary girl), the series will address such topics as self-confidence, friendship and responsibility. The nine debut titles, which will be available in September, are illustrated in full color, with a 6"x9" trim size, and will retail for $12.95 (hardcover) and $5.95 (paperback).

According to Gayle Calistro, book marketing manager for Just Pretend, the series is a natural extension of the company's line of toys, which focus on fostering imaginative play and creativity in children. Just Pretend's mail-order operation and customer feedback provided the impetus for the new book venture, Calistro said. Future plans include more series for both boys and girls.

For the launch, Just Pretend has announced a nationwide sweepstakes for booksellers, schools and libraries. In return for sending a photo of a Stardust Classics event or display, every participant will receive a Stardust Classics totebag and hardcover book. There will also be first, second and third prizes, consisting of books, co-op credits and Stardust Classics dolls, to be drawn from a raffle.
