Ambrose Backlist Soars
-- 8/17/98
Stephen Ambrose continues to enjoy strong sales in the wake of the renewed interest in WWII because of Steven Spielberg's stellar film, Saving Private Ryan. To meet the demand, Touchstone will print 325,000 copies of Citizen Solders, which begins shipping August 18. That's up considerably from the 200,000 figure announced two weeks ago. Touchstone is rushing to press another 40,000 copies of D-Day (which landed on our trade paper list this week), bringing the total in print for that book to 322,000. Also enjoying renewed activity are Ambrose's earlier works on WWII, Band of Brothers and Pegasus Bridge; new printings take the in-print totals to 71,000 and 75,000 copies, respectively. Curiously, Undaunted Courage, Ambrose's bestseller on Lewis and Clark, is also enjoying some of the demand for all things Ambrose. Touchstone printed an additional 35,000 copies of that book, bringing the in-print total to 800,000 copies after 23 trips to press.
