A little-known branch of the Air Force and the Air National Guard, which came to an alert agent's attention when it was featured in Sebastian Junger's bestselling The Perfect Storm, is to be the star in a big sale just made to Crown. The agent in question is Jennifer Gates, a comparative newcomer in the New York office of Boston agency Zachary Shuster, and the group is the Pararescue Jumpers, a team of ace parachutists who perform rescues when there is no other way of reaching people in dire peril. The book, That Others May Live, is to be co-authored by Jack Brehm, a veteran member of the team, who came to Gates's attention for his role in the Perfect Storm rescue. She pursued him, found him a co-author in Pete Nelson, and, when they had a book proposal ready, conducted what she called a "heated auction" among five houses. Kristin Kiser at Crown won with a mid-six-figure deal. In the book Brehm will describe his 20 years with the PJs, and weave in stories of some of the dramatic rescues in which he and his fellow jumpers have been involved. There is also, said Gates, strong movie interest.
