Holland to Head Musicland Buying
-- 11/9/98
Musicland has named Cynthia Holland vice-president of book merchandising, charged with overseeing the company's book-buying operations. Holland, who began at Musicland November 2, succeeds Mary Henderson. Prior to joining Musicland, Holland was national reading materials buyer for WH Smith and had also worked at Crown Books and Waldenbooks.
Books at Musicland are sold primarily through its Media Play and On Cue stores, and sales have been relatively flat this year, a spokesperson said. The company has, however, boosted the number of titles offered by its superstores; Media Play, which at the end of 1997 had 27,000 titles, now carries about 40,000 titles, while On Cue has an average of 6000, up from 3300. Gil Wachsman, vice-chairman of Musicland, said Holland's appointment brings "a new dimension and energy to our book business."

For the third quarter ended September 30, 1998, sales at Media Play and On Cue stores rose 6.4%, to $129.3 million, with comparable store sales ahead 6.4%. For the nine-month period, sales were up 5.4%, to $385.8 million, with same store sales increasing 7.2%.
