Bookstore sales bounced back a bit in February after posting a 1% increase in January. According to preliminary estimates from the Census Bureau, February bookstore sales rose 4.2% to $947 million. The gain, however, trailed far behind the increase for all retail sales, which saw an 8.8% jump. Bookstore sales for the first two months of the year combined were up 2.3%, to $2.41 billion, over the same period in 1998.
