Nancy Starr has been named editorial director of Smithmark Publishers. Starr, who had been director of New York operations for the American Book Co., will report to Leslie Stoker, president and publisher of the U.S. Media Holdings Book Group, which includes Smithmark and Stewart, Tabori & Chang.

Starr's appointment comes as Smithmark continues to phase itself out of the remainder business to focus on the promotional book market. At Smithmark, Starr will oversee the company's adult and children's editorial departments.

In addition to Starr's appointment, Smithmark named John Hofstetter sales manager. Hofstetter had most recently been sales manager at Farrar, Straus & Giroux. A third new appointment is Rebecca Obster as managing editor for Smithmark and ST&C. She was previously production controller at Cambridge University Press.

Among the titles on Smithmark's fall list are My Little Artist by children's author and illustrator Donna Green. Other titles include Wrestling Madness, Psychic and The NFL Century.
