Several weeks after Bob Wallace resigned as editor-in-chief of St. Martin's to take a job with Talk magazine, the house has named Picador v-p and publisher George Witte to Wallace's former post. Witte has been with St. Martin's since 1985. In his new post, he will report to Sally Richardson, president and publisher of SMP's trade division.

Witte's first task will be to name some one to replace him at Picador. And although he has been associated with such literary authors as Ethan Canin, Michael Chabon and Philip Gourevitch, Witte told PW he has no plans to change the direction of St. Martin's list, or to trim titles. "One of the strengths of St. Martin's has always been the depth and breadth of its list, and I have no plans to change that," he said.
