The most important literary event in the country, it is more for readers than the trade. Calcutta is always something worth experiencing and the fair always begins the last Wednesday of January and runs 12 days.

Excellent venue for the already strong Chinese language rights market in Taiwan, with 9000 titles in translation and good possibilities for expansion to the growing Chinese market in the PRC. A real trade event for the first two days, it attracted 500,000 people in 1999, with over 600 publishers and 1400 booths. US$240 per 3m x 3m stand.

Really a national book fair for book fair for buyers, this event is held in the center of the city at the ancient Palacio de Mineria and is a good excuse for a visit to this historic capital and site. For international book deals, though, Guadalajara in late November is the place to be.

The first three days, April 27-30, are reserved for the professionals and there is nothing second rate about this fair's organization. Politics are making the location more difficult, though. The "trade" dates line up with those of Argentina and Brazil fairs this year, so you can go to all three inside a two week span without leaving the continent. A variety of countries attend but the dominant presence is Central America, from Venezuela to Cuba to Costa Rica.

A three week long public event, with literally 800 cultural activities and nearly one million visitors, the professional days are linked this year to the IPA meeting which follows immediately at the Sheraton Hotel in Buenos Aires. The second largest publishing industry in the world, Japan's international book fair is expensive, but a unique opportunity to meet the Japanese book market and some of the players in the rest of Asia. Small, compared to others in Asia, this book fair aims first to be a trade event, attracting international exhibitors for the benefit of Japanese librarians and booksellers. Costs roughly $5000 per stand.
