R H of Canada Reshuffles Management
Leah Eichler -- 10/9/00

Random House of Canada has reshuffled its management, promoting John Pearce to v-p, executive editor-at-large for all imprints, a newly created position, and naming Maya Mavjee publisher of Doubleday Canada. The move will facilitate a smoother transition between the imprints and give authors more time with the editors they have established relationships with.

"The evolution of our Canadian publishing program had come from the growth and development of our individual imprints," David Kent, president and publisher of Random House of Canada, told PW. "In moving forward, we have recognized an opportunity to best harness those talents in striking the balance between acquiring books and the hands-on editing of them. I am gratified that we now have the ability and opportunity to create a new company-wide position and restructure the Doubleday publishing division to help ensure our current and continued growth."

Pearce, who was a publishing executive at Doubleday Canada for 12 years and was most recently v-p, editor-in-chief, will be responsible for developing international acquisitions with Doubleday Canada, Knopf Canada, Random House Canada, Seal Book and Vintage Canada. He will also pursue publishing opportunities in multiple formats for the Canadian market and work closely with Random House Inc.'s international division to facilitate intercompany publishing arrangements with imprints around the world. Pearce will continue his editorial association with authors, nationally and internationally, on the Doubleday Canada list. He will also edit a select number of new projects.

Mavjee joined Doubleday in 1997 and has been instrumental in the development and expansion of Doubleday's Canadian publishing program. Mavjee was formerly Doubleday's editor-at-large. Kent also announced that Doubleday Canada's new publishing team will consist of Martha Kanya-Forstner, newly appointed to editor; Christine Innes, managing editor; a new senior editor for nonfiction--a position soon to be filled--and an editorial assistant. Two associate editor positions were eliminated.
