The biggest sales story of the year (and not just on the children's front, either) was how sales of Harry Potter books leaped even higher into the stratosphere. In 1999, two Harry Potter frontlist titles sold a total of seven million copies; last year there was only one new Harry Potter title, Goblet of Fire, but that sold 7.9 million copies on its own. Sales of backlist Harry Potter titles totaled 10.8 million copies last year; with the Goblet of Fire numbers added in, plus 4.5 million of the new Chamber of Secrets paperback and 100,000 copies of the Sorcerer's Stone collector's edition, a grand total of 23.3 million Harry Potter books were sold in the U.S. in 2000.

On the series front, the Chicken Soup books, Left Behind: The Kids and Magic Tree House were the standouts. The Chicken Soup for younger readers phenomenon continues to grow, with 13.2 million copies sold of six titles (Kids, Preteen, Teen, even College). Left Behind books racked up totals of just over 3.6 million copies, both frontlist and backlist, and more than 2.5 million Magic Tree House books were sold last year.

There were roughly the same number of hardcover frontlist bestsellers last year as there were the year before (116 books sold more then 75,000 copies in 1999, compared to 121 in 2000). Aside from Harry, hardcover frontlist bestsellers included new titles from two successful creative pairings: If You Take a Mouse to the Movies by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond (just over 500,000 copies sold, with an additional 450,000 copies of three backlist titles); and Where Do Balloons Go? by Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell (325,000 sold, along with 141,000 copies of their backlist Today I Feel Silly). Other notable names on the list include perennial favorites Eric Carle, Jan Brett, William Joyce, Kevin Henkes, Brian Jacques and Janell Cannon. And newcomer Ian Falconer hit the list for 212,000 copies sold of his instant classic, Olivia.

The hardcover backlist category was dominated by two names: Rowling and Seuss. Evergreen Seuss titles such as Green Eggs and Ham and The Cat in the Hat continued to sell in the hundreds of thousands, while the Jim Carrey movie pushed sales of How the Grinch Stole Christmas close to the 500,000-copy mark. Last year's Newbery Award winner, Bud, Not Buddy, sold more than a quarter of a million copies, and Caldecott pick Joseph Had a Little Overcoat sold almost 180,000 copies.

In paperback frontlist, aside from the chart-topping Harry, Chicken Soup and Left Behind titles, Rugrats in Paris: The Movie tie-ins proved winners, while Pokémon's star clearly faded (in 1999, six of the top 10 titles in this category were Scholastic's Pokémon books, while in 2000, the first Pokémon title didn't appear until #14, and the total number of Pokémon books sold was much lower than the previous year). But taking up the charge for Scholastic was Captain Underpants, who sold nearly 500,000 copies of his latest adventure; and Pleasant Company saw the rise of its newest American Girl, Kit, who sold more than 700,000 copies of three titles combined.

Last year's paperback backlist numbers were sharply higher at the top of the list; nine books (including five Chicken Soup titles) sold more than 500,000 copies in 2000, compared to only one book reaching that level in 1999. Perennial YA favorites like The Giver, The Outsiders and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry continued to sell strongly, as did classics for younger readers such as Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little (along with the movie tie-in edition). The first three Captain Underpants titles sold more than 700,000 copies combined, for a total of 1.2 million for the series so far.
