A Clean, Well-Lighted Place in San Francisco is the grand-prize winner of the Audiobook Month 2001 Promotion Contest sponsored by the Audio Publishers Association. The California bookstore created an audio display featuring an "Are We There Yet?" sign touting the benefits of listening to audiobooks while traveling with children. As the big winner, the store received $1000 worth of audiobooks (donated by APA member publishers) and a portable CD player. The two honorable mentions, Merritt Bookstores of Millbrook, N.Y. and B. Dalton in State College, Pa., each received hats and five audiobooks as prizes.

As one Audiobook Month contest comes to a close, another one begins. Entries are now being accepted for the APA's Audiobook Month 2002 Poster Design Contest. Flyers inviting contestants to submit a design for the poster during the month-long awareness campaign next June will be posted at publishing houses, art schools, colleges and many other venues where graphic designers are likely to see them. The winning artist will receive $1000 (and the satisfaction of knowing their work will be displayed in bookstores and libraries all over the country). Rules, regulations and deadlines for the contest are available on the APA Web site, .

Audiobook publisher Books on Tape is sponsoring a national writing contest for students in grades 5-12, called The Books on Tape Challenge. In this open-ended competition, students are encouraged to write, at any length, "about those things that mean the most to them or they may submit a classroom assignment," according to a statement by the company's v-p of educational sales, Sonja Cooper. All students who enter the contest will receive a certificate of achievement, while the one winner chosen from each grade level will have their composition recorded by a professional Books on Tape narrator and will receive a portable CD player. Teachers are encouraged to enter their students' work in the contest, as well. The deadline for submissions is December 1, 2001; winners will be announced the week of January 6, 2002. Entries may be sent to: Shawn Elliott, Books on Tape Inc., P.O. Box 7900, Newport Beach, Calif. 92658. For more information, contact Shawn Elliott at (800) 541-5525, ext. 326.
