Dawn Davis, newly installed as editorial director of Amistad Press at HarperCollins, has just made her first buy in her new spot. It's a book called Bijah and Lucy: Love Beyond Slavery in Old New England, the story of Abijah Prince and Lucy Terry, a pair born into slavery in the late 18th century who were able to win freedom for themselves and their children. Terry also became known as the first published African-American poet, as well as the first of her race to take a case to a state supreme court. Their story will be told by Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina, who has her own NPR show and has received an NEH grant to work on the book. Davis bought world rights from agent Neeti Madan at Sterling Lord Literistic.
