They ranked the books by the number of times each appeared on an international list, giving 10 points for a #1 ranking down to one point for a slotting at #10. And the winners are: J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter, Books 1-4 (issued in 47 languages); John Grisham's The Brethren (published in 29 countries); Umberto Eco's Baudolino (32 countries); Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones' Diary (32 languages); Stephen King's Dreamcatcher (18 languages); Joanne Harris's Chocolat (37 languages); J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings (31 languages); John le Carré's The Constant Gardener (26 countries); Grisham's A Painted House (23 countries); and Paulo Coehlo's The Devil and Miss Prym (21 languages).
