Basic Books editorial director Liz Maguire paid six figures to William Morris's Suzanne Gluck for a book by award-winning Civil War historian Gordon Rhea. It's called Carrying the Flag, and tells of a Confederate private whose unexpected bravery in wrapping himself in the South's flag helped prolong the 1864 battle at the Spotsylvania Court House and kept the Confederate cause alive a little longer. Maguire, who bought North American rights and plans to publish in the fall of 2003, said she saw the book as a Flags of Our Fathers for the Civil War.
