Back in late October, we reported on an indie sleeper, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. The first novel was published in September with a 20,000-copy printing. It now has 72,000 copies after seven trips to press and continues to do well. While the reviews were all favorable, the author, who lives in Paris, did not come to the U.S. to promote. Still, the book continues to appear on regional and independent lists. Why? According to Knopf, its success has a lot to do with great handselling. But booksellers also report customers are mesmerized by the jacket, which shows two tiny red slippers. It demands display at the front of store, they say. Click your heels three times and say, "There's no place like the cash-wrap."
