Random House has reorganized its entire sales group, a move that resulted in the reassignment of a large number of people and the elimination of a small percentage of the group's total workforce. Spokesperson Stuart Applebaum said the changes, the most extensive since the Random House and Bantam Doubleday Dell sales forces were integrated in 1999, were made "to reflect shifts in the marketplace."

Under the reorganization, Random House will keep its three publisher-dedicated sales divisions: Random House Trade Sales; Ballantine Bantam Dell Doubleday Broadway Audio and Larger Print Sales (BBDDBALP); and Random House Children's Sales. John Groton will continue to direct the RH sales force; Madeline McIntosh remains head of the BBDDBALP sales force; and Jack St. Mary continues as v-p and sales director for children's. In a memo, David Naggar, senior v-p and director of the sales groups, explained that the restructuring "will focus our resources more cost-effectively and will give us more consistent lines of reporting." He said the company "had briefly considered" consolidating the three sales forces into one group, but decided it was "essential" to keep the three distinct teams.

Among the notable changes in the restructuring is the consolidation, within the RH sales group's field-sales force, of four separate divisions into three. As a result, Doug France, who had been director of the Central sales division, has left the company. The three divisions are now West, headed by Mark Alexander; East, headed by Duncan DeGraff; and Central, headed by Steve Wallace. All three continue to report to Betty Fairchild, v-p and sales director of independent retail field sales.

Because of the restructuring, three people who had worked as part of the RH trade sales force moved to spots within imprints. Paul Kozlowski is now part of Knopf Publishing Group; as sales marketing director for Knopf, he reports to Patricia Johnson, executive v-p. Roz Parr joins Vintage/Anchor as sales marketing director and reports to Anne Messittee, v-p and publisher. Shannon Gallagher has joined RH Information Group as marketing manager, reporting to Sheryl Stebbins, v-p and marketing director. The new structure parallels that of the BBDDBALP sales force and will lead to more customized sales programs, according to Applebaum.

Another change in the RH sales group is the appointment of four sales directors who will report to Groton. They are Janet Cooke, RH Trade Publishing Group; Joy Dallangra-Sanger, Knopf Publishing Group; Joan DeMayo, Crown Publishing Group; and Jay Cosgrove, RH Information Group. Jack Perry, who had been at Random Trade; Sabrina Farber, who was with Crown; and Mark Hampton, who had been with Fodor's, have left.

The restructuring, which had been in the works for four months, has left RH with nearly 200 people selling the publisher's titles.

With the reorganization of the sales force, the bulk of RH's job-cutting measures are over. In addition to the outright elimination of positions, an undetermined number of senior employees have had their hours reduced. Knopf editors Ash Green and Judith Jones are among those whose work schedules have been reduced.
