Philip Pullman became the first children's author ever to win the Whitbread Book of the Year award, for The Amber Spyglass (Scholastic, U.K.; Knopf, U.S.), the third part of his epic trilogy His Dark Materials. Pullman took the Whitbread Children's Award and then beat competition from the winners of the other categories to win the Book of the Year.
