Senator Tom Daschle, the Senate majority leader, has signed to do a book on the momentous 107th Congress that began nearly two years ago and ends this fall, describing its dramatic events from his privileged insider's perspective. Crown editorial director Steve Ross signed the book from agent Bob Barnett at D.C.'s Williams & Connolly agency and aims to publish next year; it was a world-rights deal, including first serial and audio, and Ross was said to have paid in the neighborhood of $500,000. There will be a co-author, yet to be announced, and the book will be edited by Doug Pepper. The current Congress has been faced with an unprecedented collection of problems, including the Florida recount in the presidential election, the change of party balance, the September 11 attacks, anthrax, the war in Afghanistan, the struggles over national security and a worsening economy.
