Publishing insiders often marvel at the disparity between the jacket art for British and American editions of the same book. But the U.K. jacket for Annie Proulx's That Old Ace in the Hole (Dec.), has left some Scribner executives wondering just what it says about how the Brits view Americans. For her part, Proulx is decidedly diplomatic: "Each expresses a different but real facet of the book—the Scribner cover emphasizes the [Texas] Panhandle landscape, while the 4th Estate cover picks up on the comic side of the characters."
