One would think that as the season of eating orgies begins, books on dieting would not be flying out of the stores. Obviously, that is not true if the name Atkins is part of the book title. This week, Avon's mass market edition of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution leads that list; it's also the book's 250th appearance on these charts. Leading the trade paperback list is the HarperCollins/Quill edition of the same book. And in the #11 spot on that same list is Dr. Atkins' New Diet Carbohydrate Gram Counter from M. Evans. These and other Atkins titles are doing exceedingly well, especially since the September 2 Time magazine article depicting this controversial diet in a positive light. Avon's latest mass market edition, released last November, has two million copies in print after 15 trips to press; for all mass market editions, the in-print figure is over 11 million copies. The trade paperback is a new edition published in June, and it has 437,000 copies after eight trips to press; total copies in print for all editions is nearly two million. The Evans title has more than 2.3 million copies in print. And sales will benefit further from a December 18 Barbara Walters special on the top 10 most fascinating people; Atkins is one of them, along with Ozzy Osbourne, Halle Berry, Sarah Hughes and Tobey Maguire.
