Two books by legendary sports figures were signed last week, at Putnam and Gotham, respectively. Rob McMahon at the former house signed DW by NASCAR ace driver Darrell Waltrip, writing with Jade Gurss; this was bought from ICM's Richard Abate for publication next February. Gotham's Bill Shinker got world rights to the story of golf superstar Johnny Miller, titled I Call the Shots. To be co-written with Guy Yocom for spring publication, this was a world rights buy from Scott Waxman.... A new book by NBA nominee (for A Slant of Sun) Beth Kephart was signed by her editor, Alane Mason at Norton. It's called Unbridled Imagination, and is an account of how Kephart worked with her son to inspire him to a creative life. It was a world rights deal with agent Amy Rennert.... The Free Press's Dominick Anfuso bought a new book by bestselling author Dr. Phil McGraw (Self Matters) for world rights. It's The Ultimate Weight Solution, due in early September with a million-copy first printing. The deal was signed with Jan Miller of Dupree Miller & Associates.... George Hodgman at Holt beat out four other houses to win a first novel called Outside Valentine by Liza Ward, based on a pair of killer lovers in the 1950s. He got world rights from Rob McQuilkin....Last week's Deals erroneously mentioned a supposedly upcoming book by James Wolcott, listed by Amazon, which apparently is not on the horizon.
