Children's book editor Meredith Charpentier died at her home on September 21 after a long illness. She was 58. Charpentier began her publishing career at HarperCollins in the contracts department and in her more than 30 years in publishing went on to hold executive positions at Frederick Warne, Four Winds Press and Morrow Junior Books. Most recently, she was executive editor at HarperCollins Children's Books, where she edited the 2003 Newbery Honor title Surviving the Applewhites.

A memorial service will be held October 23 at 4 p.m. at the Church of the Transfiguration at 1 E. 29th St. in New York City.
