Having two books in the #1 spots on PW's bestseller charts is a first for Rodale—and now the house has a third bestseller, Pete Rose's My Prison Without Bars. The Rodale group is particularly proud of its successfully executed campaign for an embargoed big book. Laydown date was January 8, and the book was the cover story (with first serialization) of the January 6 issue of Sports Illustrated. The day after laydown, all the New York papers and most papers around the country had stories on the book on their front pages. By PW's press time, there were 500,000 copies of the book in print. How did Rodale snag Pete Rose? Apparently, when the manuscript was being shopped around, the author asked Rodale executive editor Jeremy Katz why the house should get the book. Katz's winning answer: "We publish the way you played baseball—we're scrappy."
