After 27 years, Northeastern University will shut down its press later this year. All nine staff members have been asked to leave by October, when the last of the fall 2004 titles will be released. Acting director Jill Bahcall told PW, "We are going ahead with the fall season in both production and selling."

Spokesperson Christine Phelan said, "It's a decision that was made for purely financial reasons and caused a great deal of hand-wringing." Phelan singled out increased paper and production costs, as well as returns, as problems.

NU Press published 35 books a year and was directed by founder Bill Frohlich until his retirement last summer. He was never replaced.
