Thrillermeister David Baldacci this week ties his PW bestseller record: his latest cliffhanger, Warner's Hour Game, jumped on to the #1 fiction spot following its October 26 pub date (copies in print: 701,000). Though all of the author's previous books have hit our lists—nine titles, with a combined total "residency" of 195 weeks—only one previous work, Saving Faith, has hit the top position. (For bestseller trivia buffs, that book knocked off Michael Crichton's Timeline for one week back in 1999, while Hour Game becomes only the eighth title this year to knock Da Vinci off its perch.) After garnering a starred PW review for his new book ("this utterly absorbing, complex mystery-thriller... spins in unexpected directions"), Baldacci went on two national satellite tours—radio and TV—and did a signing at New York City's snazzy new Borders store at Columbus Circle. He's represented on our mass market list with two other Warner titles: Split Second marks its ninth week, while The Christmas Train makes its first appearance (copies in print: 1,500,000 and 950,000, respectively). In addition to his impressive authorial stats—nearly 40 million copies of his books are in print in 80 countries—Baldacci is the cofounder, with his wife, of the Wish You Well Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting literacy efforts across America (www.wishyouwellfoundation.org).
