Kevin Phillips, the political historian whose last book, American Dynasty, about the Bush family, was a bestseller for Viking earlier this year, is writing another book for editor Wendy Wolf there. It's tentatively titled Marching as to War, and is a study of what Phillips regards as the three "Achilles heels" of current American policy: oil, debt and religious fundamentalism. According to Phillips, the three are dangerously interrelated, with American policy being heavily influenced by Christian fundamentalism, while the oil on which the country's economy depends so heavily is largely in areas controlled by Muslim fundamentalism—all this at a time when spiraling national debt makes economic foundations more shaky than usual. Wolf bought North American, plus first serial and audio, from Wes Neff at the Leigh Bureau, and aims to publish in spring 2006—ready for the midterm elections.
