What a difference a year makes? Well, very little, when the topic is bestsellers. In hardcover fiction, the 2007 chart toppers—James Patterson, Janet Evanovich, Nicholas Sparks, Dean Koontz and Patricia Cornwell—were also the sales leaders in 2006 and 2005. Sue Grafton and David Baldacci scored in the top 15 in 2007 and in 2005. In fact, the only new name on the 2007 hardcover fiction list with sales of more than 200,000 was Donald McCaig, with Rhett Butler's People. But to earn the ranking of #16 on the annual chart, he wrote about a well-known literary figure from one of the all-time bestsellers. And debut novelists barely made a dent in 2007 annual sales.

Patterson had the most success in 2007—he landed five books in the top 15, with combined sales of more than 4.460 million; in 2006 and 2005, he had four books in the top 15. Khaled Hosseini also had a stellar year, leading the fiction charts with his second novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns. His debut, The Kite Runner, was the bestselling 2007 trade paper bestseller.

Familiarity breeds success—that held true for many of the nonfiction top sellers, too. Two books by doctors Roizen and Oz were in the top 15. Kevin Trudeau, Joel Osteen, Suze Orman, Paula Deen and Guinness World Records were also back again in lead positions.

Still, there were many newbies in nonfiction. The bestselling hardcover book of 2007, The Secret, boasted sales of more than 4.5 million and dominated the top spot on the charts for 29 weeks. Three of the top 10 2007 bestsellers were from Collins, and they were all first-timers: altogether, The Dangerous Book for Boys, The Daring Book for Girls and Deceptively Delicious sold about 4.7 million copies, enough for HarperCollins to post gains in the second quarter ended December 31.

Religion and politics are comfortable bestseller bedfellows, and 2007 had a plethora of books in these categories. Religious leaders Joel Osteen, T.D. Jakes and Max Lucado were in the top 30. Thomas Nelson, the largest religion publisher in the U.S., had the largest number of books with sales of 100,000 or more—14 in 2007, compared to its previous high of 10 in 2006. Popular political topics among 2007 bestsellers included the Supreme Court—a memoir by Clarence Thomas and Jeffrey Toobin's The Nine—and books by former presidents Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter (and by presidential hopeful Barack Obama).

Cooking and fitness continued to be bestseller favorites. Paula Deen had three 2007 bestsellers with combined sales of more than one million. Other well-known cooks among the 100,000+ crowd included Martha Stewart, Giada De Laurentiis, Jamie Oliver and Alice Waters. And after all that good eating, we turn to diet and fitness—there was hardly a week in the course of 2007 that the hardcover top 15 did not include at least one title on these topics, more often two. Four of the top 15 titles advocated healthy eating.

Of course, famous names and personalities were strong in nonfiction. Stephen Colbert amused readers with his witty I Am America and claimed the #5 spot for bestselling nonfiction last year; Eric Clapton hit the right chord with his memoir—it was the #14 nonfiction title. Steve Martin's Born Standing Up took the #22 slot for the year. Tom Brokaw, Ken Burns, Wayne W. Dyer, James Cramer and many others wrote books that did well and benefited from media exposure.

# Sales figures were submitted to PW in confidence, for use in placing titles on the lists. Numbers shown are rounded down to indicate relationship to sales figures for other titles.

Note: Rankings are determined by sales figures provided by publishers; the numbers generally reflect reports of copies “shipped and billed” in calendar year 2007. Publishers were instructed to adjust sales figures to include returns through January 31, 2007. Publishers did not at that time know what total returns would be—indeed, the majority of returns occur after that cutoff date—so none of these figures should be regarded as final net sales. (Dates in parentheses indicate month and year of publication.)
