Well, to paraphrase Richard Nixon, you won’t have sudoku to kick around anymore. After years in the forefront, not a single sudoku title was submitted to PW for the 2007 paperback bestsellers. But the good news is that all the other paperback favorites that readers have come to love over the years—familiar novelists and cookbook authors and movie/TV tie-ins—are back in abundance. As a sign of the political and economic times, there are also sightings of a bestselling presidential candidate and books by several financial gurus with answers for a shaky economy.

Paperback remains the domain of genre fiction; romance, thriller and supernatural all find a well-earned place among 2007’s bestselling titles. Some of the names change over the years, but they remain familiar ones nonetheless. In years past, Sandra Brown, Michael Crichton or Ken Follett have dominated; this year, those icons had only a book each on the list. But others stepped into the breach. Tops in 2007 in terms of number of titles on the list was Jodi Picoult, with an amazing 10 titles and combined sales of 2,040,649. Nora Roberts had seven, for a total of 5,568,661 sold. James Patterson weighed in with six (3,933.949); Janet Evanovich had four bestsellers (4,150,000); and three for Clive Cussler three (1,751,629) and Fern Michaels (2,014,000). Literary cachet was provided by Cormac McCarthy, whose Pulitzer Prize-winning The Road and his movie tie-in No Country for Old Men both made the list, combining to sell 1,681,592 copies.

Rachael Ray remains the queen of cookbook authors. Although there were rumors that her syndicated TV show might be cancelled, there will still be plenty of Ray on the various shows she has on the Food Network. Ray placed three titles on PW’s bestseller lists in 2007, with a combined total sales of 1,071,801 copies. Rachael Ray: Just in Time was the biggest seller, at 703,681 copies, for Clarkson Potter. Paula Deen, another Food Network stalwart, also benefited from extensive exposure, and her Lady & Sons Savannah Country sold 181,904 copies for Random. Strangely, the author who came in second to Ray in total foodie sales was Phyllis Pellman Good, who does not have a TV show. Her Fix It and Forget It cookbooks sold 546,950 copies in 2007.

If book sales are a barometer of the national mood, then Illinois senator Barack Obama should be on his way to the White House. In 2007 his two memoirs, The Audacity of Hope and Dreams from My Father, sold 439,658 copies for Three Rivers. Neither John McCain nor Hillary Clinton made the list.

With the financial markets imploding around us, it is a little surprising (or is it?) to see that only three well-known financial gurus made the list. Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad, Poor Dad sold 323,937 for Grand Central, while Suze Orman’s The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous, and Broke netted 280,368 for Riverhead. The “Latte Factor” man, David Bach, sold 188,080 copies of Start Late, Finish Rich for Broadway. With the economy faltering toward the “R” word, this may be an important area for publishers in 2008.

Movie and TV tie-ins still have a tremendous impact on paperback sales, sometimes propelling backlist titles to the front again. In 2007, 13 tie-ins sold an overall total of more than 3,800,000 copies. Movie tie-ins were led by the Nanny Diaries by Nicola Kraus and Emma McLaughlin, which sold nearly 800,000 copies in both trade paper and mass market. Other heavy sellers were Freedom Writers Diary by Erin Gruwell, The Mist by Stephen King and I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.

Listed on the following pages are trade paperbacks and mass market titles published in 2006 and 2007; the rankings are based only on 2007 sales. To qualify, trade paperbacks had to have sold more than 100,000 copies in 2007; for mass markets, sales of more than 500,000 were required. A single asterisk (*) indicates the book was published in 2006; a double asterisk (**) means the book was published earlier but either remained or reappeared on PW’s bestseller charts in 2007. These reappearances are most often movie tie-ins. A pound symbol (#) indicates that the shipped-and-billed figure was rounded down to the nearest 5,000 to indicate the books’ sales relationship to other titles. The actual figures were given to PW in confidence, for use only in placing titles on these lists.
