Kathleen Calhoun Nettleton has been promoted from promotion director to assistant to the publisher at Pelican Publishing Company. She's been at Pelican since 1983.

Wong to Clarkson Potter

Betty Wong has joined Potter Craft as an editor. Wong arrives from Melcher Media; before that, she was an editor at Bulfinch. She has acquired such books as Sew U: The Built by Wendy Guide to Making Your Own Wardrobe and Inside the White House.

Obituary: Carol Houck Smith

Carol Houck Smith, a v-p and editor-at-large at W.W. Norton & Company, died last week at the age of 85. Smith spent her entire 60-year publishing career at Norton, editing works by Stephen Dunn, Maxine Kumin and Charles Baxter, among others.

Smith joined Norton in 1948 as a secretary and worked her way up the editorial ranks; she was appointed a v-p in 1980. Between 1996 and 2008 she edited two NBA winners and a Pulitzer Prize winner. There are two scholarships endowed in Smith's name: the Carol Houck Smith Scholarship in Poetry at the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference and the Carol Houck Smith Fiction Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin.
