CP Gets Model Advice On Raw Food
Aliza Fogelson at Clarkson Potter took North American rights to a new cookbook by former model Carol Alt that is a primer on preparing and eating raw food. Agent Laura Dail of the Laura Dail Agency brokered the deal for Alt, who has already published two raw food cookbooks with CP: Eating in the Raw (2004) and The Raw 50 (2007). Dail said the new cookbook, which will feature 100 recipes, is aimed at the raw food newbie, offering "swaps and substitutions for favorite snacks" that allow those just getting into raw food to "ease into this way of eating." The book is tentatively scheduled for spring 2012. Alt, who's also written some novels (including Model, Incorporated [Avon, 2009]), was a major model in the 1980s when she was the face of ad campaigns for, among others, Diet Pepsi and Hanes.

Putnam Kids Invests in Facebook Game Designer
Jennifer Besser at G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers bought world rights, in a three-book deal, to the debut dystopian novel by Marie Lu, Legend. Lu works as an art director for a Los Angeles video game company, and the book is built around the world she created for a popular Facebook game, also called Legend, that currently has over 13,000 subscribers. The book is set in 2130 in a Los Angeles that has been submerged by flooding. A girl who is a prodigy being groomed for government work meets a boy who is one of the state's most-wanted criminals. The main characters' love story—she's tasked with finding his brother's killer—is based loosely on Les Misérables. Legend, which is scheduled for December 2011, is the first book in a planned trilogy; Kristin Nelson at Nelson Literary brokered the deal, and Kassie Evashevski at UTA is handling film rights.

HarperTeen Nabs Bourne-Like YA Trilogy
Jessica Regel, at Jean V. Naggar, sold North American rights to a supernatural YA trilogy by Lesley Livingston tentatively called Starling. HarperTeen editor Laura Arnold acquired the books, which Regel said are reminiscent of The Bourne Identity and "blend Norse, Egyptian, and Greek mythologies with paranormal elements." In the series, warring powerful New York City crime families, all with ties to the supernatural, vie for control of the fate of mankind. Book one in the trilogy is scheduled for summer 2012. Livingston's debut novel, the 2008 faerie-tinged Wondrous Strange, was the first book in a YA trilogy she just finished for HarperTeen; book two, Darklight, was released in 2009, and book three, Tempestuous, is scheduled for January 2011.

Renée Sedliar at Da Capo took North American rights, at auction, to journalist Emma Pearse's Sophie: The Incredibly True Adventures of a Dog Overboard. The book was pre-empted in the U.K., and Jerry Kalajian at IPG sold film rights to Sony. Based on actual events, the title follows the inspirational tale of a dog that made it home after being lost for months on the Great Barrier Reef. Da Capo is planning a fall 2011 publication; agent Erin Hosier, at Dunlow Carlson & Lerner, brokered the deal.

Mark Doten at Soho Press bought world rights to David Zimmerman's sophomore novel, Heat Lightning. Zimmerman is an assistant professor at Iowa State University, and his debut novel, The Sandbox, was published by Soho in April. (A novella by Zimmerman called Socket was published by Anvil Press in 2002.) Heat Lightning, which Zimmerman sold without an agent, follows an AWOL Marine who goes from guest to prisoner when he hides out at the home of a troubled teenage girl he meets online.
