Borders Lost $132 Million in April
According to statements filed with the bankruptcy court, Borders had a loss from continuing operations of $32.1 million in April, and when reorganization costs are added in lost a total of $132 million. Sales in the March 27–April 30 period were $101 million, and other revenue was $72.1 million, for total revenue of $173.1 million.

BAM Has $3.5 Million Loss
With sales falling 11.1% in the first quarter, to $104 million, Books-A-Million reported a net loss in the period ended April 30 of $3.5 million. In last year's first quarter, BAM had net income of $2 million. Comparable store sales were down 13.2%. BAM's Terry Finley called the first quarter a "very difficult sales environment" that reflected the erosion of print book sales to e-book sales, a weak bestseller lineup, and soft media environment, exacerbated by the tornados that ripped through the southeast. BAM expects the second quarter to be another difficult period.

Bloomsbury Forms Digital Publisher
Bloomsbury Publishing has formed Bloomsbury Reader, a digital global publisher that will do e-book and print-on-demand editions of books in cases where, according to a statement, "all English-language rights have already reverted to the author or the author's Estate and where there is no edition currently in print." The imprint will be run out of Bloomsbury's New York and London offices, and Stephanie Duncan has been named publisher. Bloomsbury Reader will have a September launch list of 500 titles, with books supplied by the literary and talent agency the Rights House. Bloomsbury hopes to reach similar agreements with other agencies.

Regnery Launches History Imprint
This fall Regnery Publishing will launch a new history imprint under the direction of Alex Novak, Regnery associate publisher. The launch list includes Founding Rivals: Madison vs. Monroe and the Election That Created the Bill of Rights and Changed a Nation. In addition to history titles, the imprint will publish new history, biography, and military history titles, mostly as hardcovers and e-books.

Pfund Named OUP USA Prez
Niko Pfund, acting president of Oxford University Press USA since December, has been named president of OUP USA. Pfund will continue as academic publisher of OUP USA.

Black Classic Press Buys Howard Univ. Press Backlist
After 39 years of scholarly publishing focused on African-American life and history around the world, the Howard University Press is closing its doors. The university has reached an agreement with Baltimore-based Black Classic Press, an African-American independent press and print-on-demand vendor, to acquire 85 of the press's backlist of more than 175 scholarly titles, with plans to reissue them under BCP's new line of Howard University Classic Editions.

Fox Chapel Makes Three Purchases
Fox Chapel Publishing has completed a three-company shopping spree, adding roughly 300 titles and continuing to broaden its reach in the DIY and hobbyist woodworking market. The largest acquisition was of Design Originals, a publisher of craft, sewing, and beading titles. Fox Chapel acquired over 260 backlist titles. The second purchase was for the publishing arm of Heliconia Press and involved 17 book titles and 18 DVDs. The final purchase was of Plain White Press and included 12 parenting titles.
