The new #1 fiction title in January was from bestselling author Jussi Adler-Olsen, who landed in the top spot with The Alphabet House. Adler-Olsen’s most recent U.S. title, The Keeper of Lost Causes, was released last August by Dutton and received a PW starred review. Dutton will publish Adler-Olsen’s The Absent One this coming August. Also new on the German fiction list is Ally Condie’s Crossed, the second book in her Matched series, which made its debut at #3 in January. It was published in the U.S. by Dutton last November, and PW praised its “vivid, poetic writing.” The dystopian YA series has sold rights in 30 countries and film rights have gone to Disney.

Another book finding international success is Amy Bratley’s The Girl’s Guide to Homemaking, landing at #2 on the Italy combined list. Pan Publishing first published the book by the British author in the U.K. in February 2011; no word of a U.S. house.

The Netherlands’ top title, A Bit Lost by Chris Haughton, is a children’s book about an owl who falls from his nest and his search to find his mother. It was first published in the U.S. by Candlewick under the title Little Owl Lost in August 2010. Also on the Netherlands chart is Dream, Dare, Do by Ben Tiggelaar, a popular book on leadership that has sold over 200,000 copies in Europe.

Correction: In the January 23 issue, we listed the English translation title for Isabel Allende’s Il quaderno di Maya as The City of the Beasts. The English title is Maya’s Notebook and will be published by HarperCollins in spring 2013.
