A Statue for America: The First 100 Years of the Statue of Liberty
Jonathan Harris. Four Winds, $14.95 (225pp) ISBN 978-0-02-742730-1
Black-and-white photos illustrate Harris's well-written account of Liberty's agonizingly slow progress to her permanent site and of people, past and present, involved with her historically. In essence, the viewpoint of this book differs from others. Harris, for instance, is more sympathetic to the committee of wealthy men who failed to raise sufficient funds for the statue's pedestal. Other instances of the author's approach are quotes from editorials and letters to newspapers (pro and con the monument, arguing over its location, etc.). Adding color and excitement, as well, are warm expressions of support for Lady Libertyfrom her partisans in France and America. Junior Literary Guild selection.(12up)
