Teany Book: Stories, Food, Romance, Cartoons, And, of Course, Tea
Kelly Tisdale, Moby, Moby Moby. Penguin Putnam, $16.95 (176pp) ISBN 978-0-14-200505-7
Teany, the quirky restaurant located in New York City's Lower East Side and owned by musician Moby and his ex-girlfriend, is known for serving delicious vegetarian food and over 100 flavors of tea. Fortunately, this highly entertaining book is much more than just a behind-the-scenes look at the eatery. Like the offbeat Teany, it is an exercise in eccentricity. Filled with everything from creative meat-free recipes (both for food and beauty aids) to a list of 23 things that are preferable to shrubbery, this scrapbook is both useful and absurdly hilarious. It opens by relaying a fake history of Teany, then captures the eclectic mood of the restaurant with a bizarre collection of anecdotes, cartoons, hangover cures, random customer interviews and song playlists. An abundance of information about the joys of tea and vegetarian eating, along with plenty of useless but amusing tidbits (""2/3 of Teany customers would rather go back in time than go to the moon!"") round out this witty book, which will motivate readers who have never been to the trendy cafe to visit and join in the fun.
