Helping Teenagers Into Adulthood: A Guide for the Next Generation
George R. Holmes. Praeger Publishers, $87.95 (200pp) ISBN 978-0-275-95341-6
Holmes (neuropsychiatry and behavioral science, Univ. of South Carolina School of Medicine) has written widely on adolescent psychology, including Adolescent Group Therapy (Greenwood, 1991). In this work Holmes provides comprehensive, in-depth discourse on the stages of adolescent development, relating them to psychological and social constructs of the family and to the changing social context of the United States in recent decades. His writing is concise and instructive; he cites studies (many classics) dating back to 1904 and includes charts but excludes case studies and anecdotes. More scholarly than general undergraduate texts and parental self-help books, this work will serve graduate students and professionals in psychology, medicine, social work, and education who work with adolescents and their parents. This is a helpful but nonessential addition to academic libraries and professional collections.--Carol R. Nelson, Ball State Univ. Lib., Muncie, Ind.
