The Brown Fat Revolution: Trigger Your Body's Good Fat to Lose Weight and Be Healthier
James R. Lyons. St. Martin's Press, $24.99 (275pp) ISBN 978-0-312-59540-1
Cosmetic surgeon Lyons bases his weight-loss plan on a study reported by the New England Journal of Medicine (Vol. 360: 1500-1508) pointing to two types of adult fat cells: brown fat that protects us from cold, provides energy, and makes humans the shape they are; and yellow fat, the result of poor diet and insufficient exercise. Lyons offers a plan to redistribute good brown fat while eliminating bad yellow fat. There are separate plans for women under and over 50. Verdict Filled with Lyons's observations and personal anecdotes, this book is an entertaining and accessible read. The nutrition-and-exercise plans are reasonable: readers are given a month of eating and working-out plans. As a bonus, a facial skin care regimen is included.-Rachel M.
