The Captive Bride
Susan Spencer Paul. Harlequin Books, $4.99 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-373-29071-0
After fighting the French for England's king, Lord Senet Gaillard is awarded the return of his ancestral lands, on condition that he marry Lady Katharine Malthus, daughter of the man who received Lomas Castle when Senet's father was executed for treason. Senet arrives at Lomas with his band of knights, and Katharine appears to accept her fate--until night falls and she flees, hoping to locate a distant cousin to beg his protection. After Senet forces Katharine to return, the couple discover their mutual attraction and resolve to work together for the sake of the villagers. Though the supporting characters add lively secondary love stories, and Paul (a.k.a. Mary Spencer, Lady's Wager) provides intriguing details of 15th-century castle life, this promising romance misses the mark by meandering to its ending. (Aug.)
