In a fantastic world where at least six different sentient races coexist in pre-technological peace and unicorns walk in the forests, Nelvins consider themselves the most superior life form. For Flutirr, born to the highest caste of Nelvins, life should be simple. By adhering to the rules of High Nobleness--which prohibit emotional or spontaneous expression, Flutirr should live a peaceful life. Instead, wild music captivates him and sends him on a quest to save the life of the lowliest and most contemptible Nelvin in his world--a casteless boy named Don. Presenting a minute portrait of an alien culture, this speculative fiction was the winner of the Avon Flare Competition for young writers. Although Flutirr and his culture are very different from our own, the novel offers an all-encompassing example of the maxim that one must be true to oneself.
