Jeanine McMullen. W. W. Norton & Company, $15.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-393-02617-7
McMullen here continues the enchanting saga of life on a Welsh farm begun in her first book, My Small Country Living. It's a hard life of impossible weather, barnyard tragedies and impending financial disaster, but the author, seeing the humorous side of every situation, writes with delicious wit about the endearing creatures she loves and cares for as she might children, and the various people, helpful or otherwise, who drift in and out of her life. All of her animalslovesick goats, demanding dogs, obstinate ducks, a hypochondriacal horse, disputatious sheep, a childless pig who kidnaps a lambare relentless in imposing their nonconformist personalities on their owner, but she weathers everything, including her eccentric mother, the psychic Mrs. P. (who comes to stay and makes life more than usually complicated and chaotic), and even manages to turn her adventures into a successful BBC radio series. Photos not seen by PW. (October)
