Escape from Exile
Robert Levy. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH), $16 (176pp) ISBN 978-0-395-64379-2
Levy's first novel centers on Daniel Taylor, who is ripped from the world he knows and catapulted to Lithia, a beautiful but war-torn realm. There, not only can the youth communicate with animals telepathically, but he soon becomes embroiled in a fierce conflict beween two claimants to the throne. Through judicious use of his talent and increasing self-reliance, Daniel is able to help end the strife and fulfill the mysterious quest for which he was originally sent to Lithia. The neatly characterized animals Daniel befriends along the way (who become his own private army) offer diverting comic relief--especially in the case of Me, a small poisonous snake who is terrified of being stepped on. A well-founded fantasy with abundant action. Ages 10-14. (Apr.)
