Wolf Plays Alone
Dominic Catalano. Philomel Books, $14.95 (1pp) ISBN 978-0-399-21868-2
All wolf wants to do is play his horn--alone. But one moonlit night when he tries to do just this, his solo is interrupted by a parade of forest animals eager to join in the fun--rabbits squeaking off-key, a fox with a squeezebox, a moose on a tuba--until finally, chaos reigns. Interrupting the cacophony with a blast of his horn, the long-suffering wolf manages to unite the group for a quick jam session. After the others bow out one by one, wolf finally gets his chance for a nocturnal solo. Catalano's poetic, cumulative text has a graceful flow that makes it a sweet, though unexceptional, read-aloud. Preschoolers will enjoy the amiable animals featured in the earth-toned colored-pencil illustrations. Ages 4-up. (Sept.)
