Wildly Sophisticated: A Bold New Attitude for Career Success
Nicole Williams. Perigee Books, $15.95 (240pp) ISBN 978-0-399-52947-4
Chick lit meets career guidebook in this sassy and practical volume by career manager Williams. Much of the information she provides is commonsensical, but she presents it in a refreshing way, with plenty of interactive exercises to get readers thinking about who they are, what they want to do and how best to go about doing it. The author offers realistic tips for finding passion, owning up to fears and self-doubt, and gaining respect from colleagues and bosses. She also tackles topics like style and appearance, making a few requisite references to brands from Coach to Prada and explaining,""Taking charge of your personal image isn't frivolous or manipulative. It's smart."" Because she illustrates her point with a story about her own transition from inappropriate miniskirts to more sophisticated pinstripes, William's message doesn't feel preachy. And even though the author believes that a perfectly""balanced"" life isn't necessary or realistic, she offers a reminder that in the midst of driving towards career goals, it's okay to stop and have fun.
