With Love, from Sam and Me
Nadine Roberts. Fawcett Books, $2.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-449-70368-7
This deftly woven story incorporates adventure, romance and suspense. Marylou Britten, 15, has lived with her foster parents, ``Uncle'' Ed and ``Aunt'' Bonnie, since early childhood. The pair have developed an intense drinking habit in recent years, and have been making a virtual slave of Marylou. Ed even slaps her occasionally. When Ed hits Sam, their new charge, Marylou anticipates a miserable future for the toddler and decides to run away with him. They ultimately meet Danny, 17, who becomes a helpful and important friend. In her vivid, forthright narrative, Roberts has created a sympathetic heroine who eventually realizes that there are better alternatives to fleeing from a situation. With a climax that has all the elements of a first-class thriller, her book will be a welcome addition to any YA collection. Ages 12-up. (Apr.)
